When Should I Book My Maternity and Newborn Sessions?

After photographing San Antonio families for over 15 years, one question comes up all the time:

“When should I book my maternity and newborn photos?”

And honestly? I get it. You’ve got a million things on your plate right now — from picking out cribs to researching strollers and trying to get some sleep (maybe?). The last thing you want is to stress over when to schedule pictures.

Let me make this easy for you.

When to Do Maternity Photos

In my experience, the best time to schedule your maternity session is between 28 and 34 weeks. By then, your bump has that beautiful round shape, but you’re (hopefully) still feeling comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the session.

I always recommend booking during your second trimester, just to make sure we get you on the calendar. I’ve been doing this for almost 15 years now, and spots tend to fill up quicker than people expect — especially during busy seasons like spring and fall.

True story: One sweet mama reached out the day before her due date. We managed to squeeze in her maternity session just in time… but she actually went into active labor during the shoot! She was glowing, smiling through contractions, and powered through like a total champ. It all worked out — but let’s just say, it’s a good idea to book early when you can.

When to Book Newborn Photos

Those soft, sleepy newborn photos everyone loves? They’re usually taken within 6–14 days after birth. That’s when babies are still super snuggly and sleepy enough for those cozy, curled-up poses.

Since due dates aren’t exactly set in stone, I always recommend booking your newborn session while you’re still pregnant — usually around 20–30 weeks. We’ll pencil in your due date, and once baby arrives, you’ll just send me a quick message and we’ll set the exact session date.

And don’t worry — I’ve got everything you need for your session. Wraps, headbands, soft blankets, white noise — all the things that help make baby comfortable and keep the vibe calm and peaceful. I want this to be a stress-free experience for you.

Why Booking Both Sessions Makes Life Easier

Many of my families choose to book both maternity and newborn sessions together, and it really does make things easier. You’re not searching for a second photographer later on, and we’ve already connected and figured out what you love. Plus, there’s something so special about documenting your story from bump to baby.

Let’s Keep It Simple

I know everything feels like a lot right now. But these photos? They’ll be the ones you look back on and treasure when your baby is all grown up and you’re wondering how they ever fit in your arms.

If you’re expecting, reach out whenever you’re ready. I’ll walk you through everything and help you figure out the perfect time to schedule your sessions.
